2009 Youth Venture sites
Walk alongside local ministries to serve the homeless and elderly, and help
lead vacation Bible school. In your free time, you’ll hit the beach and enjoy
cultural festivities and concerts.
You will begin your time in LaGrange, Ga., living with and hearing the stories
of immigrants from El Sauce, Guatemala. You will then spend two weeks in
El Sauce living with and working alongside those whose family members have
immigrated to Georgia.
Find a bit of flavor serving in the Southwest. A city of more than half a
million people, Albuquerque brings together Latino, Native American and
Caucasian cultures. During the day, you will serve at a camp for children.
In the evenings, you can experience city life and the great outdoors.
In Chicago, you will take a serious look at the cultures that are represented in
different neighborhoods. By visiting work sites as well as cultural events, you will
get a glimpse of how exciting diversity can be. You may serve food, clean up a
neighborhood, or hang out with kids for the day.
Through volunteering and interacting with the poor of the city, you will learn to
humanize people you come in contact with. The urban poor will become more than just
another statistic; they will become real people. You will explore different cultures and
traditions of the city, and likely also get to spend time in the mountains!
Experience the rich culture of Bolivia. You will serve at the Samuelito Daycare
Center, and help with a retreat for youth. You will be hosted by the Mennonite
churches in Santa Cruz.
Join the ministries of Soli Deo Mennonite Church by helping with camps, in
schools, or during worship times at church. You’ll meet German youth, have
opportunities to travel, and learn about local culture.
Help build community through programs for at-risk children in this city divided
along Catholic and Protestant lines. The team will also take time to explore the
Emerald Isle’s ancient treasures.
In Bradford, you’ll have the opportunity to show God’s love in action. Bradford is a
university town with great racial, socio-economic and religious differences. During
your time here, you might serve at a local elementary school with after-school
programs, at a peace-themed coffeehouse, with local choirs, and alongside refugees.
Stretch yourself as you explore inner-city life and experience the diversity of
Toronto. This site, in partnership with MCC TOOLS, will combine service with
opportunities for learning and reflection about issues like poverty and homelessness.
